Uxbridge, Ontario - Moving To Uxbridge? - A Community Of Character

Uxbridge, Ontario - Moving To Uxbridge? - Building A Community Of Character

A community of Character shows respect for each other and those in authority

 "RESPECT"

"Respect denotes both a positive feeling of esteem for a person or other entity (such as a nation or a religion), and also specific actions and conduct representative of that esteem. Respect can be a specific feeling of regard for the actual qualities of the one respected (e.g., "I have great respect for her judgment"). It can also be conduct in accord with a specific ethic of respect." source wikipedia

Take some time this Saturday and learn how respect can be woven into the fabric of Uxbridge.  Listen as two experts on the subject discuss how respect can be become a thread in the fabric of the community.

A School Principal: Mr. Rick Dejong

Mr. DeJong feels strongly about the partnership that families, schools, and the community at large, have in teaching and encouraging respect.

Quaker Village Public School, known for its positive, welcoming style was opened with Dejong as principal.

In his 18th year as a school administrator, Rick is currently the Principal of Sunderland Public, having also served at Uxbridge Public School, RH Cornish (Port Perry) and Cartwright Central Public School (Blackstock).

A Police Officer: Det. Tim Brown

Det. Browns work has included the investigation of: fatal collisions, drug production and trafficking, frauds, and sexually based offenses.

Tim is a dedicated family man who believes respect plays an important part in community life.

Brown has worked with the Ontario provincial Police for nine years starting as a uniformed officer in Dufferin County he is now a detective in  Haliburton County / City of Kawartha Lakes.

Respect should not be confused with tolerance, since tolerance doesn't necessarily imply any positive feeling, and is compatible with contempt, which is the opposite of respect.source wikipedia

Make The Last Few Days of April Count - And Be Counted On The Second Of May

Make The Last Few Days of April Count

Have you finished your 2010 income tax return? ..... or are you ..... Done for another year, all the receipts have been collected, tax slips organized and all in the hands of your friendly tax return preparer. All that is left to do is write the cheque and make sure it gets posted in time.

But that is not the end of your Tax Pain

Unfortunately some may have been so busy getting all of the above wrapped up before the deadline they forgot all about another tax deadline.

The Second installment of your Uxbridge property taxes are due by Friday April 29th, 2011.

Failure to pay them on time will result in an immediate penalty of 1 1/4%
and
another 1 1/4% again on the 1st of every month after that until paid.

And Be Counted On The Second Of May

If you did not make use of the advance polls ..... Exercise your right and vote

If the advance polls are an indication voter turnout is going to be high.

Make sure your voice is Counted

Home Ownership Matters

Home Ownership Matters

Here are just a few of the reasons

Why Home Ownership Matters

To People, To Communities, To Ontario

  • In 2010, MLS® sales in Ontario Generated 9.3 billion in additional consumer spending.
  • It has been estimated that home sales on MLS® generate over 80,000 direct and indirect jobs annually in Ontario.
  • 28% of Ontario households are tenants

A recent poll released by the Ontario Real Estate Association(OREA) indicates 70% of renters would like to buy a home at some point in the future. Over 50% of those polled indicated affordability was the key reason for holding back.

The Poll also revealed that 81% felt that home ownership is more difficult than it was for their parents and 89% felt it was only going to become more difficult in the future.

"Today's poll is compelling evidence that a majority of Ontarians are concerned about the affordability of home ownership for themselves and future generations," said John Wright, Senior Vice President of Ipsos Reid.

Life And Living In Uxbridge, Ontario - One Voice Matters

Life And Living In Uxbridge, Ontario -  One Voice Matters

In his post Determined - Dedicated - Committed - One Voice Barrie speaks about the power of one voice and that one voice can and does make a difference.

"Concerned about the possible loss of the play park in her neighbourhood Sarah was galvanized into action. Setting up a group page on Facebook, contacting local Realtors, reaching out to her neighbours, holding meetings in her home, Sarah became the voice of her community. She became a whirlwind of activity. She gained the support of the local trail captain. She learned about the costs and issues from councils perspective. She was prepared to be heard and heard she was."

While Sarah was but one voice she had the backing of her "community". Speaking on their behalf she captured Councils ear, and they listened.

But that is not the end.

This meeting was just an opportunity to be heard the next time council meets on this matter is the one that counts. Sarah will need the support of the "community" at this meeting as well. This is the meeting where council will vote on the park and a large number of her supporters being present may be needed to sway the vote in the right direction.

Keep up to date by visiting Sarah's group page on Facebook

Nourish [nur-ish] - Preventing Hunger - One Can At A Time - Corporate Philanthropy

"Nourish [nur-ish] - Preventing Hunger - One Can At A Time

In a recent conversation with a few friends from Campbell's Soup Cananda, about food banks and relief efforts, I learned first hand what one company is doing to help alleviate hunger locally, and how we can all play a part in helping to stamp out hunger here in Canada.

I feel really blessed to know, and work with, some wonderful people who are in a position to make a real difference in this world. Dedicated people who are involved in helping those who could use a hand up or assistance in a time of disaster or strife.

"There are 925 million undernourished people in the world today. That means one in seven people do not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life. Hunger and malnutrition are in fact the number one risk to the health worldwide" ... source World Food Programme

Campbell's Canada created a product "Nourish"that does not need water or a can opener, which makes it ideal for relief effforts where water is scarce or possibly contaminated.

Nourish delivers both fibre and protein and is touted as a "complete meal" containing a full serving of vegetables, grains and meat and alternatives as per Canada's Food Guide.

"It is the first time in Canada that a food company operator has created a product thinking about Canadians who are struggling to put food on the table," Katharine Schmidt, executive director of Food Banks Canada ... source The Toronto Star

Each 425 gram Nourish can has a pop-top lid, 24-month shelf-life, can be eaten hot or cold and doesn't require the addition of water, making it an ideal potential food resource for food banks here in Canada and in disaster relief around the globe.

How we can Help

Campbell's launched Nourish with an initial donation of 100,000 cans to Food Banks Canada.

Initially intended only for food banks and relief efforts a decision was made to offer limited availability of the product in the stores of its retail partners. This product was not intended to make money so 100 per cent of the net profits from every can sold will be used to fund further hunger/relief initiatives.

"making money from Nourish would "mess up the intention" of the initiative." Mr. Philip Donne, Campbell's president

Next time you are in your grocery store ....

pick up some Nourish and taste it for yourself .....

then buy some more and donate to your local food bank .....

it wll be in your grocery stores soon!

My Brother Is My Brother-In-Law

And conversely that makes my brother my brother in law ..... a commonality that has touched our lives and the lives of our children very deeply.

Via Barrie Clulow (My Time Is My Own):

My Brother Is My Brother-In-Law

What a strange statement you might say, but not really I would reply. You see my "brother" is my "brother-in-law".

A Little history

I grew up in a middle class family of five boys, Mom was a stay at home mom and Dad worked full time for the same company for most of his life. We were a one car family with no TV until I was in my teens.

We spent most Sunday afternoons and evenings at my grandmothers where we enjoyed a great meal and watched Leave it to Beaver, Ponderosa, and the Lawrence Welk Show on her TV. Christmas dinner was a family affair with all of moms siblings and their families.

We all, even Dad, were involved in the local Air Cadets or Navy League after Cubs and Scouts.

We spent our summers at a cottage we built mostly out of an old building we had helped dad demolish in his spare time. Life was good.

Foster Parents

Mom and Dad decided we had room to share in our hearts and our tiny 900sq ft bungalow for those less fortunate than us and that we would become a foster home. At first mom would only take new born's or infants that were in need of short term care as she was concerned we would all become too attached to a baby that was with us for any length of time.

Over time some of these children started to stay for longer periods of time and some were a little older. One of these older children stayed with us for quit some time and became an integral part of our family. He became as much my brother as my brothers were.

Somtimes life throws us a curve ball

One day my Dad collapsed at work and ended up spending months in and out of hospital. With our sole source of income gone and with the time mom was away from the house visiting dad a very difficult decision was reached and our young foster brother was moved to a new home. (We were told he was being adopted).

Life after our home

Although we did not know it at the time, adopted is not where he would end up. He was moved several times over the next few years and one summer he was sent to a little cottage just north of Stouffville for the summer. A cottage that was filled to overflowing with foster children every summer a home that was like summer camp for many of these children who would never get out of the city otherwise.

It was here that he came back into my life. The group of kids there this particular summer were looking through a family album when this young boy exclaimed that's my brother after looking at a picture with me in it while I was on my honey moon

By chance or by some master plan he was back in my life. The cottage he was spending the summer in,  the foster home he would end up spending the rest of his youth in and where he would become an integreal part of the family, was the home of my mother-in-law.

Today - 45 years later

He and his wife are still very much a part of our family
just as my brothers and their families
or my wife's brothers and sister and their families

So you You see my "brother" really is my "brother-in-law".
